Action Research Plan

1.  Determine which teachers’ assignments have been changed from the 2011-2012.

From the master schedules, a spreadsheet will be made to show teachers’ assignments that have been changed and which have not.

2.  Create and send a letter to teachers to determine those that will participate in the action research study.

  1. Eric, your plan is very detailed and I appreciate the topic. Some teachers have in their mind which grade level and/or subject they want to teach, and they may become discouraged or less motivated if they are unable to acquire or remain in their preferred assignment. I'm interested to see how heavy or light the educator's motivation plays into student success. This correlation could be great information for future leaders to consider when they initially arrive on a campus and want to begin making staff assignment changes. This next suggestion may be another research topic for another time, but I also wonder what the student perspective is: do they realize when a teacher is unhappy in a teaching assignment and what difference does it make on their overall feeling about the class?

  2. Eric, I like this action research topic, and I am very interested in the results. Would it be possible for you to conduct teacher interviews, as well as email surveys? I think you might have a better participation rate, and be able to get more detailed responses, if you had some personal conversations with the participants, as long as you could assure them of strict confidentiality.

  3. I agree with Janet. Also, don't forget that teachers dig Jeans Day, so maybe you can get with your administrator to see if he will agree to allow you to offer a Jeans Day to teachers if they volunteer to participate in your research. You might ask if you can offer a Jeans Day to the teachers each time they complete a survey as well. You may get a strong initial participation, but you want to be able to offer the additional Jeans Days so that they continue to complete your surveys....just a thought.

  4. I think this is a very interesting idea for a research topic. As a middle school teacher I am certified to teach only two subjects, so there isn't a lot of changing allowed. Are you in an elementary school? I like Janet's idea about the interviews. This could definitely get you more insight than just a survey. I guess my quesiton is this: Will you be researching all the teachers in your school only (how many do you have?), or will you be trying to gain access to all teachers in your school district. I'm from a rural area with not a very big teacher pool. Just curious.......

  5. Thank you ladies! I didn't think about interviewing as a way to go more in depth.

    Pam - I work at a high school. With Texas Certifications, Math and English only offer composites for secondary. But Science and Social Studies have composite and more specific ones. Therefore, the ones with composite are more likely to be moved around than the ones with the more restrictive certifications. Our department chairs are now looking to only hire composite certification holders, though...
